“Together we aspire together we achieve“

The Founding of The Trinidad & Tobago Nurses Association (TTNAA), Inc.

In August 1968, five visionary women came together in Brooklyn, NY, united by a shared commitment to the values of friendship and service. Phyllis Mills, RN (President 1969-1972, 1979-1980), Gloria Rose Eddy, RN (President 1973-1974), Sylma Nelson, RN, Matjory Jeffrey, RN, and Kirby Theodore, RN, recognized the need for a supportive organization that could make a lasting impact on both the nursing community and the broader society. With determination and a clear sense of purpose, these founders laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving association. Sylma Nelson remains an active member to this day.

The Association’s Structure and Governance

The Trinidad and Tobago Nurses’ Association of America (TTNAA, Inc.) is a self-governing, nonprofit organization that operates in accordance with its constitution and bylaws. Its executive board is responsible for setting policies and making key decisions, while various committees and the general membership assist with the development and implementation of initiatives. TTNAA, Inc. has always relied on the dedication of volunteers to ensure its smooth operation and continued success.

Legacy and Impact

Over the years, TTNAA, Inc. has worked tirelessly to build on the legacy established by its founders. One of its proudest achievements is the successful biennial one-day health conference, a tradition that began in 1979. In addition, since 1983, the organization has partnered with the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses Association to coordinate a prestigious five-day quadrennial conference in Trinidad and Tobago, further fostering collaboration and professional development within the nursing community.

Community service remains a core value of the association. TTNAA, Inc. participates in health fairs, provides annual monetary donations to charitable organizations in the United States, and contributes medical equipment to hospitals in Trinidad and Tobago. The association also supports natural disaster relief efforts in the Caribbean,  and in the USA.

In its commitment to nurturing the next generation of nurses, TTNAA, Inc. awards scholarships to nationals and descendants of Trinidad and Tobago pursuing nursing degrees in New York. These grants are offered annually to students who demonstrate financial need and meet the association’s criteria.

Recognition and Honor

In 2014, the TTNAA, Inc. was deeply honored when it received an award from The Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in New York. This recognition was given in acknowledgment of the association’s outstanding contributions to education and health, a testament to the enduring legacy of the founders and the ongoing efforts of its members.

The Association has received numerous citations from The Governor’s Office, The Mayor’s Office and from other elected officials for their contributions to the community.
